[Baton Rouge]
WineSense is Cork & Bottle's series of informative wine tastings that started over 4 years ago. They keep each of their seated classes to under 30 people so you can enjoy your wine-tasting with some elbow room; stand-up tastings allow for a few more people to show up, but they never crowd the room. Unless otherwise noted, each tasting is held on Wednesdays at 7:00 and last for about an hour or so. Beginning in mid-February, seated tastings will be held in the store on Perkins Road, and stand-up reception-style tastings will continue be held at The Camelot Club. Cheese and crackers will be served at the tastings unless otherwise noted.

The following is C&B's BATON ROUGE calendar through the first week of March. Look for theSpring schedule to be announced mid-February that will feature in-store seated tastings each and every Wednesday! So get ready Baton Rouge...it's time for some WineSense in 2007!

Wednesday, January 31
Under the Radar: The Best of the Napa Valley, $45
Under the Radar, Cult, Benchmark. . .these are all names to describe the great number of small, limited production wineries from the Napa Valley that are grown by responsible farmers, made by superstar winemakers like Randy Lewis, Joshua Krupp, Philippe Melka and Celia Masyczek, and enjoyed by a very limited numer of people primarily because there just isn't much to go around. You'll have the chance to taste the best of the "insider’s" Napa Valley without having to board a plane!

Join us on Wednesday, January 31st at 7:00, as we pour through 8 such examples of blue-chip, world class Cabernet and Cabernet-based wines from some of the best wineries from the Napa Valley that you've never heard of. Be the first kid on your block to discover something new!

Wednesday, February 14
That’s Amore. Italy: A Love of Food and Wine, $25
The history of these tastings has taught us that lots of folks steer clear of restaurants on Valentine's Day, but they're still looking for something to get them out of the house. Well, for a real show of love on Valentines day, you just need to look at the wines of Italy and how they pair with food. We welcome our favorite Italian Wine Purveyor, Mr. Antonio Molesini, for a jaunt into the finest wines of Italy. This seminar takes us from Central Italy to Tuscany to Piedmont to the Veneto and back to Tuscany, where we will delve into the great, traditional Sangiovese-based wines of Brunello and their modern new counterparts, the Super Tuscans.

Join us as Wednesday, February 14th at 6:30 as Antonio leads us in a tasting of 8 Italian wines, 4 "Traditional" wines and 4 "New Italy" wines. Its an evening that fans of Italian wines and Antonio's personality won't want to miss, and besides--a restaurant date for Valentine's day is so cliché.

NOTE: we've had to postpone our February 14th Baton Rouge tasting with Antonio Molesini because of serious health issues with Antonio. He is one of Cork & Bottle's dearest friends, please keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers from his illness.

Thursday March 1
Clos Encounters. A Burgundy Wine Dinner, $85
Cork and Bottle is holding a special wine dinner at Mansur’s on the Boulevard on Thursday, March 1st. We welcome Mr. Billy Weiss, owner of North Berkeley Imports, as our guest speaker, who will walk us through a reception tasting of white Burgundies and a 4-course dinner featuring Prime Village, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru red and white Burgundies with each course. The cost for dinner and wines is only $85 per person, and the dinner is limited to 40 people.

Wednesday March 7
Spain 101 – From the Values to the Home Runs, $25
To put it bluntly, the Spanish wine industry is running around with its hair on fire. That is to say, that while Spain has a long history of winemaking and perhaps more vineyards than any other country in the world, the country is undergoing a massive revolution in wine quality, technology developments, and new plantings. New producers and labels are appearing annually, and great strides in quality and consistency are being achieved throughout the country. It will take quite a tasting to begin wrapping your arms around Spain, but once you do it will be quite a reward. These wines are great!

Join us on Wednesday, March 7th at 7:00 as we pour through 8 dynamic wines from Spain featuring the old and the new.
