Pfister Sisters
"Tight" Female Vocal Harmony

Saturday, October 13
6:30 to 9:00 p.m.
Admission $ 10.00/person

The Pfister Sisters (who are not really sisters, or Pfisters) began performing in 1979 in New Orleans to revive and perform the music of New Orleans’ own Boswell Sisters, the originators of jazz vocal harmony singing back in the early 1920’s. Holley Bendtsen, Debbie Davis, and Yvette Voelker have included other styles and original compositions, but the Boswell Sisters' material remains their specialty.

One of the songs that resonated among the New Orleans customers was a 1932 number titled We Got to Put the Sun Back in the Sky. "The song had been a part of our set for years," recalled Yvette Voelker. "But when we sang it for the post-K audiences, we got a huge response. It convinced us that this music was going to be part of what helped bring our city and our country back together."

Holley Bendtsen is one of the two original members of the group, along with Yvette Voelker, which began delighting audiences with their sweet, hot jazz harmonies in 1979. They were singled out in 1981 by Variety as one of the best new acts of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and 20 years later, with Debbie Davis rounding out the trio, their 2001 Jazz Fest performance was described in newspaper and online media as "sublime" and "sparkling." They have sung with Vet Boswell of the Boswell Sisters, Maxene Andrews of the Andrews Sisters, and other performers ranging from the Neville Brothers to Linda Rondstadt.

Their latest honor was their selection to be the New Orleans artists in residence at Abbaye aux Dames Cultural Center in Saintes, France, in November 2006. They performed at several area locations and worked with vocal music students of all ages and types, bringing the gospel of New Orleans music to receptive audiences.

Today, the Pfister Sisters have expanded their repertoire to include music from the 40's and 50's, as well as some of their own compositions, but their primary mission remains bringing the music of their inspirations, The Boswell Sisters, to light and to life.
