French vintners are asking permission to take 267 million bottles of fine wine--all of it AOC "appellation" wine, the highest level of French wine--and distill it into industrial alcohol. |
Facing with huge surpluses of wine after a great harvest last year and falling French wine consumption, the vintners say that they would only get one-fifth of the usual market price for this wine, but that would be better than not selling it at all. You can read more details of their plight here.
Personally, I think that someone should introduce these guys to the concept of a sale--you know, selling your wine at a reduced price. Not only would you maybe be able to get rid of your surplus wine, you'd introduce a lot of potential new customers to your product. I'll bet a lot of people who aren't familiar with French appellations would be willing to try a few if they weren't $25 a bottle. What these guys need is a few special-offer "French Appellation Sample Packs" in our local wine stores. |
