A Memorable Wine Quest

[Burgundy]
I'd like to draw your attention to a fine article in Slate, in which the author writes about his obsession with a high-end white burgundy and his quest to taste it one more time.

"This is a story about a bottle of wine. A very expensive but also very delicious bottle of wine—a wine that so captivated me when I first tasted it that I immediately resolved to taste it again. What followed was an almost two-year odyssey that tested the limits of my resourcefulness and perhaps also exposed the warping effect that wine has had on my brain."

You'll want to read the article in its entirety, and ponder the question he poses, but does not exactly answer...is any wine worth $700/bottle? I think that if you've tasted one of those wines that is, you'll know the answer is yes. And if you think the answer is no...you haven't tasted the right wine yet. More reason to keep tasting!

Here's just a piece of his tasting note for this amazing wine. Although the rest of his description is a bit more metaphorical, notice how he grounds it with particulars: distint aromas, mouth feel, and the balanced interplay of larger elements.

"In no particular order, I smelled hazelnuts, lemons, apples, pears, marzipan, oatmeal, lanolin, petroleum, honey, flowers, toasted oak, and mint. All of these scents were perfectly delineated, yet they also somehow added up to a seamless whole. On the palate, the wine had a rich, oily texture and a Platonic balance of fruit and acidity, all backed by a steel rod of minerality."

That link again.
