What is a varietal?
A varietal is a wine made entirely or almost entirely of one single grape or one variety of grape. Until the 1960s, most people had never heard of the actual grape varieties, like chardonnay or cabernet sauvingnon.
At this time, wine making was a European tradition and European wines were often made with blends of grapes. These wines were being named after the places they were made. Champagne, Chianti, and Bordeaux are all places.
When California and other "New World" wine makers began making serious amounts of fine wines, they labeled their product after the grape type from which it was created. This was done first, because they were working with noble grapes that Europeans had always used, and they wanted people to know that. Additionally, California, Australia, South Africa and South America didn't have wine making traditions which helped buyers instantly anticipate what their wines would taste like.
