Some French AOC Wines a Sham?

[France]
According to a French consumer group, roughly one in three of all wines marketed under France's regional appellation system do not deserve it. In France's wine classification system, wines from some 470 regions are recognised as an "appellation d'origine controlee" (AOC).

These appellations are supposed to ensure that regional wines follow strict standards, such as using grapes from specific areas or only using specific grape varieties. The AOCs are intended to be marks of quality and traditional wine-making.

A Memorable Wine Quest

[Burgundy]
I'd like to draw your attention to a fine article in Slate, in which the author writes about his obsession with a high-end white burgundy and his quest to taste it one more time.

"This is a story about a bottle of wine. A very expensive but also very delicious bottle of wine—a wine that so captivated me when I first tasted it that I immediately resolved to taste it again. What followed was an almost two-year odyssey that tested the limits of my resourcefulness and perhaps also exposed the warping effect that wine has had on my brain."

Quelle Horreur! French Wine with Cutesy Labels

Let's be frank...the French make some damned good wine. But sales, especially in the lower end of the market, have been slumping; everyone wants a first-cru Bordeaux, but not everyone wants a vin de table that's the Gallic equivalent of Gallo Hearty Burgundy.

Some French winemakers think they may have the solution: instead of snobby names of obscure French regions and vinyards, give your wine a funny name and a whimsical label, to appeal to supermarket shoppers in far-away lands who don't speak French and wouldn't know a Burgundy from a Barsac, and won't pay more than $10/bottle for a wine under most circumstances.

You may already be familiar with Red Bicyclette (it's available at a Wal-Mart near me!), but how about Arrogant Frog--a label that has a little fun with the French stereotype and ethnic nickname?
