WINE =======: 2004 Marquis Phillips Shiraz 9 AOC : McLaren Vale Tasting Date: 2006-07-14 Varietal : Shiraz Score : 93 Country : Australia State : South Australia Region : McLaren Vale Notes ----- This is an amazing wine. Its color is a deep inky purple, almost black, lightening to magenta at the very edges. It has a strong, fragrant nose of tar and eucalyptus, with maybe a hint of butterscotch. The flavor is incredibly concentrated--the term "jammy" was invented for wines like this. It almost reminds me of blackberry pancake syrup, if you could take 95% of the sweetness away from that. To go with its thick taste, it has a medium body, much thicker than your usual non-dessert wine. Its high alcohol content gives it great legs, but this is well balanced out by the powerful flavor. A glass of this is almost a meal. I think it's my new favorite red wine. Additional Notes ---------------- Sadly, it seems that the Marquis-Philips partnership that brought us this amazing wine ended in the summer of 2006. The brand will remain, shepherded only by the Philips half, though I assume the name will remain the same for brand integrity. The Marquis branch is creating its own new label, to be called Mollydooker, and it's getting favorable reports on its new offerings.
