WINE =======: 1996 Dunn Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain AOC : Howell Mountain Tasting Date: 2006-12-17 Varietal : Pinot Noir Score : 95 Country : USA State : California Region : Howell Mountain, Napa Valley Notes ----- The color of this wine is a lovely dark garnet. It has a medium nose of plum, blackberry, black cherry, pencil shavings, and a hint of tar. Strong legs. The flavor is very extracted--distinct tannins, but nicely muted, notes of tar, with the fruit a bit muted at first. It has a super long finish. After giving it some time to breathe, it gets great...tannins fade, and the fruit comes forward--black cherry, with tar--and becomes even smoother. I'd like to try this one again in 10 years. Additional Notes ---------------- We were a bit worried about this wine, since it may have spent the week following Katrina in the wine cooler. (The wine cellar stayed relatively cool for days, while the wine cellar was like an oven when it was rescued.) If it was damaged by the conditions, the damage was minimal; it was still an awesome wine. We tasted the same wine & vintage the month before Katrina, so check out the tasting notes on that one for comparison. The Howell Mountain wines consist of one hundred percent Howell Mountain fruit.
