Chateau/Producer: | Marques del Puerto | Wine Name: | Rioja Gran Reserva | Country: | Spain | State: | Rioja | AOC: | DOCa | Region: | Rioja Alta | Wine Score: | 92 | Notes: | When we opened this wine, the top of the cork looked a bit funky, like it had a bit of mold on it, but we opened it anyway. The lower portion of the cork (near the wine) was fine, and the wine smelled and tasted untouched. The color was clear and definitely mature; a rich bricky red, fading significantly to pale tawny at the edges. The nose is reasonably strong, fruity, with strawberry and cherry, and a hint of tar. The wine has clearly visible legs. The wine has a very interesting flavor; it's got a touch of sweetness. Still, it's got an element of tannins left. The fruit is a bit muted, but still evident, mainly black cherry. I'm not sure what a Rioja is supposed to taste like, and this one might be moving past its prime at this point, but I liked this wine a lot. | Tasting Date: | 2005-01-22 | Varietal: | 85% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo, 5% Graciano | Price US$: | 27.00 | Source: | Calandro's (Perkins), Baton Rouge, LA |
