WINE =======: 1989 Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon AOC : Napa Valley Tasting Date: 2005-10-22 Varietal : Cabernet Score : 87 Country : USA State : CA Region : Calistoga Notes ----- Deep ruby red color with pink edges; nose of menthol with medicinal overtones and hits of dusty tar; another wine with lots of hard tannins, on the way out. At least the 89 had an ever-evolving, complex nose; this wine lacked neither the taste, nor the nose to justify its stature. Production Notes ---------------- A cooler vintage, with measurable snowfall in the winter and a cool spring, but some very good ripening during late September to October. To ensure even ripening, we aggressively thinned the crop and this technique helped to yield a highly extracted wine with significant body and structure. Additional Notes ---------------- This was part of a ten-year (85,89,90,95,96,97,99,00,01,02) vertical tasting at the California Grill, Contemporary Resort, Walt Disney World in association with Chateau Montelena and the Epcot Food and Wine Festival, 2005. Reviewer Note: This vertical was tasted in chronological order (from oldest to most recent vintage) at the request of the hosts, which included representatives from Chateau Montelena.
