1989 Mouton Rothschild [Pauillac]
[Bordeaux/Meritage-style blend]
Posted by Mike P. on 2004-03-07 07:39:33 [Show TN in Text Format]
Chateau/Producer:Mouton Rothschild
Wine Score:89
Notes:The wine's color gives away its age, clearly showing thinning and orange-brown tinges. Bouquet of worn leather, cinnamon, nutmeg, sweet cherry. After more than an hour of decanting, this wine was still wound incredibly tight. Tighter than a nun at a Megadeth concert. The tannins were unyielding to the point of being bitter. After double-decanting for two to three hours, the wine opened up but was still not terribly impressive for its age and stature. There is an initial impression of boldness and balance with a nice finish, but the end doesn't justify the means.
