1993 Brezza Sarmassa Barolo[Piedmont]
[Nebbiolo]

Chateau/Producer:Brezza
Wine Name:Sarmassa Barolo
Country:Italy
State:Piedmont
AOC:DOCG
Region:Barolo
Wine Score:88
Notes:This wine has a clear ruby red hue, with a distinctly brick tone near the edges, and a good strong aroma. There's a good bit of sediment towards the end of the bottle, but it settles well and you can only detect a bit of cloudiness if you are looking for it. It has a stong component of red fruits, cherry mostly, with red currant and berries, and the right amount of acid to provide balance. At this age, however, it has a strong component of tannins that can overpower the fruits completely unless you give it a nice long time to breathe. On the plus side, that also means that you can keep the open wine for a day or two and it just gets better.
Tasting Date:2004-08-31
Varietal:Nebbiolo
Production Notes:The original cantina and cellars are underground, lined and arched with old brick, in a naturally cool environment which maintains relatively equal temperature and humidity year-round. Recently the family have built a restaurant and hotel above their winery and cellars which offers excellent food and spectacular views of the surrounding country. The Sarmassa vineyard is 6+ acres and is located at an elevation of 325 meters with a western exposure. The Nebbiolo vines are planted to a density of 1,500 per acre and are between 15 and 35 years of age. The average yield is held below 2 tons per acre. The soil of the Sarmassa is similar to most of the ground in the Comune of Barolo; a mixture of fine agate sand (24%), limestone (46%) and clay (30%). The porous nature of this soil encourages drainage during rainy periods and tends to conserve
