Nazi Raccoons Attack German Vineyards

A spate of marauding raccoons have been laying waste to vineyards in the Brandenburg region of Germany. These raccoons' furry ancestors were released in Germany in 1934 with the encouragement of Hermann Goering, chief forester of the Third Reich, to provide more targets for hunters.

Their wild numbers were greatly enlarged when a bombing raid in 1945 struck a raccoon farm. The varmints have since flourished without natural predators to keep them in check.

"Raccoons wiped out almost the entire harvest in a matter of days," winemaker Werner Kothe told Deutsche Presse-Agentur. "We have 540 vines and they have been stripped bare by these animals."

Although there are estimated to be as many as 1 million raccoons in central Germany, they have so far spared the main wine-growing regions further south and west, but they're spreading fast.

Quick, somebody export some coon-hounds, and tell the French that raccoons are a delicacy!

Learn more about these masked wine-thieves.

Wouldn't the marauding 3rd Reich raccoons enjoy a nice glass of Liebfraumilch to dip the grapes in (being they lack salivary glands)?
