Ric says:

We are back from Burgundy.

The trip was every bit of the success I had anticipated, and we will have some dynamic wines for you in the fall from the trip. In the meantime, here are some super wines on sale. While it seems odd to be offering big reds like Chateauneuf at this time, I have had a lot of inquiries about the 2003 vintage due to the excellent article in a recent edition of The Wine Spectator, so I am including three of what I feel are the best wines I have tasted.

Famega Vinho Verde 2005 : $6.00, on sale $5.00

I offered this wine on sale previously and it was a big hit, and so with the intense heat of the summer upon us, I think it is worth putting it on sale again; Vinho Verde is a very light and low alcohol wine from Portugal; if you are in Portugal, you will find it is the wine the locals drink.

Chateau Mas Neuf Rose 2005 : $13.50, on sale $11.50

The French rose prices have become a luxury item, but here is one that is very reasonable and quite good, and dry; light but not without fruit and flavor, it is a perfect wine for this time of year.

Laurent Miquel Vigonier 2005 : $12.00, on sale $10.00

I tasted this wine at a pre-arrival tasting at Fran Kysela big tasting, and knew this was a wine to have for summer drinking; this is great for an aperitif, or with Nicoise salad, fish, or other light fare; delicious.

Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc Les Setilles 2004 : $19.00, on sale $16.00

This is a beautiful Bourgogne, one that will please you for the taste and the money; in fact, before I left for Burgundy recently, this vintage was sold out, but the distributor pulled some cases from another market for me, so here is another chance to buy some before we move to 2005; by the way I tasted the 2005 at Leflaive and have to say it is equally good, but bigger and richer; I like them both, the 2004 for style and purity, the 2005 for a more full-bodied taste and ripeness, anyway you need to get some of this vintage&you will not be disappointed, I promise.

Bessin Chablis 2004 : $22.00, on sale $19.00

Due to the fantastic 2004 vintage in Chablis, you will find this wine to have a lot more fruit and stuffing than normal in a village level wine; this wine sees no wood, so the flavors are pure and classic; if you have not tried any Chablis from this vintage, I highly recommend you try Bessin.

Almira Los Dos Grenache/Syrah Old Vines 2003 : $10.00, on sale $8.00

Here is a simple but very flavorful wine from Spain that works perfect for your rotation of everyday red wine; medium-bodied with soft tannins and a nice ripeness that is very pleasurable; this wine is enjoyable with lighter foods, or on its own, you might even consider for your next party at $8.00 a bottle.

Castillo de Almansa 2005 : $12.00, on sale $10.00

Produced from 100% Granacha Tintorera, a local grape grown in Almansa; it reminds me of a Cotes du Rhone as it has ripe fruit, good structure and power, but not dense nor tannic; beef or pork ribs grilled slowly and then matched with wine would make a nice Sunday afternoon gathering with friends.

Clos du Caillou Cotes du Rhone Vieilles Vignes 2003 : $18.00, on sale $15.00 !!!

Many of you know this wine, and it has been one of the best selling wines in my store since I opened three years ago; this is just about as good as a Cotes du Rhone gets at any price; it is fairly big, with a good amount of Syrah in the blend, and it is fantastic buy for $15.00; I highly recommend you consider a case.

Charvin Chateauneuf du Pape 2003 : $70.00, on sale $60.00

I have eagerly waited for the release of Charvins 2003; it is truly one of the best, especially given the price of the luxury cuvees offered from other producers; rated 93 points by Parker, and 96 points from The Wine Spectator; a truly great Chateauneuf.

Raymond Usseglio Chateauneuf du Pape 2003 : $46.00, on sale $40.00

The cepage here is primarily old vines Grenache which makes this wine very supple and enticing even at this stage of its development; I like the lushness and kirsch-like fruit; I typically have this wine with roasted or grilled whole chicken with lots of rosemary, garlic and olive oil; this is a crowd pleaser!

Clos St. Jean Chateauneuf du Pape 2003: $46.00, on sale $40.00

The difference here is a predominantly Syrah based Chateauneuf; this wine is more opulent and fleshy, which will make it perfect for grilled meats or chicken; I find this wine very balanced for the vintage and hedonistic; 90 points from Mr. Parker if this entices you more.

Bernard Morey Santenay Passetemps 1er Cru 2003 : $34.00, on sale $30.00

Here is a fairly big red Burgundy for a very good price; this is the kind of Pinot you served with Coq au Vin, a wine that can stand up to a lot of different flavors and not get lost; and due to the extreme heat of the 2003 vintage, it is even more robust than normal; I have felt that 2003 was a vintage to buy a good bit at the low end as the sunshine intensified the grapes and made the wines more full-bodied than normal; a very good Burgundy for the money.
