John Parker and The Lakefront Loungers will play at Pontchartrain Vineyards’ Jazz’n the Vines concert at on Saturday, September 23rd, 6:30 to 9:00 p.m.

There’s an interesting history associated with the group's naming, according to leader John Parker. The original Lakefront Loungers were formed to recreate the outdoor sounds of the erstwhile weekend mecca of New Orleans, Milneburg, on the shores of storied Lake Pontchartrain. The Old Lake resort area had hundreds of camps, each with its own music, frequently employing jazz musicians from the Crescent City. The seawall put in by the WPA in the mid-thirties was the end of the camps and the hot jazz along the lakefront. Then, in the early sixties, Dr. Edmond Souchon, along with Johnny Wiggs and a band of New Orleans jazz giants, recalled "the good old days" of Milneburg as The Lakefront Loungers.

The current incarnation of The Lakefront Loungers is once again an all-star band of musicians dedicated to continuing the tradition of classic New Orleans jazz, recalling the golden years of jazz on the lakefront at Milneburg.

Parker is a native New Orleans guitarist, banjoist, and vocalist, and grandson of the noted jazz musician, historian, and founder of the original Lakefront Loungers, Dr. Edmond Souchon. Parker’s love of song was planted at an early age by his grandfather. "I sat at his knee while 'Doc' played early New Orleans jazz and blues, Tin Pan Alley songs, and vaudevillian novelty numbers," relates Parker. Much of this music is kept alive by John in his performances, while playing on Doc's vintage instruments.

The community is invited to bring a blanket or spread, chairs, umbrella, picnic fare, flashlight, and a thirst for fine wine and music in a magnificent vineyard setting. There will be a $10.00/person entrance fee. (No beer, outside wines, or liquor.) Gourmet sandwiches and desserts from Winfield Farms and Pontchartrain Vineyards wines will be available for purchase. The concert begins at 6:30, with gates opening at 5:30.

Pontchartrain Vineyards is located at 81250 Hwy. 1082 (Old Military Road), 6.5 miles from its juncture with Hwy. 21 (Military Road), just North of Covington, Louisiana. For more information or directions call John or Susan Seago (985) 892-9742 or visit www.pontchartrainvineyards.com.
