The Basics of Pinot Noir from Top to Bottom the Whole World Over
Tuesday, November 14, 2006
Cost: $25 ($45 if you stay for dinner)

Sideways, Sideways, blah, blah, blah. Look, you didn’t need a movie to realize that Pinot Noir is an amazing, diverse varietal that makes myriad styles of wine. We're thankful, however, that it did make Pinot "cool," and now that people are drinking more Pinot Noir than EVER, we thought a little formal instruction was in order. We'll have 8 different wines and styles of Pinot Noir from the subtle wines of Burgundy, to the fruit-driven wines of Carneros in California, to the balanced style from Oregon, and we’re even going to pay homage to Italian Pinot Nero and the up-and-coming Pinots from New Zealand. Location - Tigre's Restaurant.

All Roads Lead to Burgundy
Wednesday, November 15, 2006
Cost: $50

A friend of mine was once quoted as saying "All roads lead to Burgundy." What he meant was that the wines of Burgundy define balance and sense of place, and are the most elegant wines in the world...and they're not easily understood. In the heart of Burgundy, there are only two grapes: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. There are, however, hundreds of different styles of wine, and we will set out to demystify and explain the subtlety and nuance of the wines from the Cote d'Or in Burgundy and what is meant by a village wine, a Premier Cru, and a Grand Cru. Jon Smith will lead this tasting with 8 wines (4 whites, 4 reds--one wine from each level of classification) that define Burgundy and what its many levels of quality are all about. Location - The Camelot Club.

Rich Man/Poor Man
Tuesday, November 28, 2006
Cost: $25 ($45 if you stay for dinner)

In the world of wine, sometimes a stone's throw from one vineyard to the next can mean a quadruple in price for a bottle of wine. Likewise, it means an expensive wine probably has a neighboring plot of land that produces a similarly styled wine that costs two or three times less than the more expensive wine. That's why you'll often hear wines referred to as a "Poor Man's (insert expensive wine name here)," meaning that the less expensive wine is similar to the more expensive one--the only difference is location. This is a repeat of last year's very successful seminar where we let you put your palate to the test. Jon Smith will taste through a flight of 8 wines, 4 of which are the more classic, traditional, and expensive "Rich Man" wines and the other 4 will be their neighboring, similarly-styled, value-priced "Poor Man" wines. You’ll taste each wine blind to see if you can detect which one is the ringer and which one is the value so you really can "put your money where your palate is." Location - Tigre's Restaurant.

May All of Your Pains be Grower Champagnes
Thursday, December 7, 2006
Cost: $50

It's that time of year, time to pop the cork on celebrating a year gone by and the promise of a new one. In the Champagne region of France, wines are either made from grapes bought on the open market, or they are made by people who grow their own grapes and make their own wine...and the difference is amazing. Grower Champagnes tend to be small production and distinctive, and really give you insight into the palate of the grower. They are wines of character and style, and because they often fly "under the radar," many people overlook them--that is, until tonight. Give yourself a holiday treat early this season, and learn about some amazing wine in the process! Cheers! Location - The Camelot Club.
