Cork & Bottle's WineSense tastings for 2007 are under way in the Big Easy. WineSense is Cork & Bottle's series of informative wine tastings that started over 4 years ago. They keep each of our seated classes to under 30 people so you can enjoy your wine tasting with some elbow room, while stand-up tastings allow for a few more people to show up, but never crowding the room. As always, unless otherwise noted, each tasting is held in the New Orleans store on Wednesdays at 6:30 and lasts for about an hour or so.

The following is Cork & Bottle's NEW ORLEANS calendar through the first week of March. Get ready New Orleans...WineSense is back in 2007!

Wednesday, February 14.
Super Sexy, Lush, Hedonistic Pinot Noir, $25
It's true, drinking Pinot Noir does have a decided advantage on Valentine’s Day. Let's not even worry ourselves about the fact that Pinot makes a lush, seductive wine, and that there are many, many wonderful examples of the grape here for us to try. Look past the fact that it is soft, subtle, and sexy; clear your notions that Pinot has become the most popular red wine drunk in America, and that myriad styles of the wine are produced. Just look at the facts put forth by Dr. Geoff Kalish: "Wine heightens (amorous) desire in ways that other forms of alcohol cannot, and Pinot Noir grapes have the greatest abundance of pheromones (aromatic substances markedly influencing human [amorous] behavior) of all popular wine grape varietals tested." So, whether you’re up for a tasting of some outstanding, world-class Pinots from around the world, or you just want to test Pinot’s "power," then join us for a great Pinot tasting on this Valentine’s Day. Besides, aren’t restaurants so overdone on Valentine’s Day?

Wednesday, February 28
Rich Man/Poor Man, $25
It’s Back! In the world of wine, sometimes a stone's throw from one vineyard to the next can mean a quadruple in price for a bottle of wine. Likewise, it means that an expensive wine probably has a neighboring plot of land that produces a similarly-styled wine that costs two or three times less than the more expensive wine. That's why you'll often hear wines referred to as a "Poor Man's (insert expensive wine name here)," meaning that the less expensive wine is similar to the more expensive one--the only difference is location. This is a repeat of one of our most successful seminars, where we let you put your palate to the test. Taste through a flight of 8 wines, 4 of which are the more classic, traditional, and expensive "Rich Man" wines, and the other 4 will be their neighboring, similarly-styled, value-priced "Poor Man" wines. You'll taste each wine blind to see if you can detect which one is the ringer and which one is the value, so you really can "put your money where your palate is."

Wednesday, March 7
The Wonderful World OUTSIDE of Chardonnay and Cabernet, $15
What’s the difference between Syrah and Petite Sirah? What’s a Meritage? What kinds of white wines are good other than Chardonnay? These questions and more will be answered by Laurie Delk at this very informative seminar for those folks just getting accustomed to wine and really are ready to venture "off the front porch." Laurie will pour through 8 very nice examples of alternative varietals, with detailed explanations of some wonderful new grape varietals you likely have never heard of. Its going to be a good one, and besides, it's pretty cheap too!
