[News] [Israel] |
A group of archaeologists digging in northern Israel announced that they have found the remains of what may be the oldest and largest wine cellar found to date, containing the remains of approximately 3,000 clay jars. Chemical analysis of the shards confirm that the wine once held in them contained some of the usual elements added to wine in the day. |
| The wine showed traces of honey, mint, cinnamon bark, juniper berries and resins--all used to mask imperfections in the wine, enhance its flavor, or preserve it. The scientists speculated that the wine probably resembled modern retsina, a Greek wine flavored with pine resin. The cellar was destroyed approximately 3,600 years ago. | Get more details. | |
