A study released today revealed that after testing, ten major California wines contained the chemical Glyphosate, the "active" ingredient in the popular weed killer "Roundup" by Monsanto as well as other herbicides. This does not bode well as some of the wines were actually labeled "organic." |

[News] [California] |
In the affluent Silicon Valley town of Atherton, one of the most wealthiest areas in the country, a single theft of over $100,000' worth of rare and expensive wines taken from a private home has wine-lovers abuzz. Even the New York Times has taken notice.
The thieves ignored electronics, jewelry, and lesser wines to hit the basement wine cellar and zero in on the good stuff: the average value of each stolen bottle was $3000. The haul included a magnum of '59 Petrus with an estimated value of $11,000. Because of their focus on high-value bottles, it's clear that the thieves knew their wine. |

[Editorial] [California] |
If you're of a certain age, you probably remember the commercials that an aging Orson Welles did for Paul Masson wines. They featured the memorable tag line: "We will sell no wine before its time." In my house, this led to frequent shouting of "It's time to sell some wine!" often accompanied by pantomimes of turning empty pockets inside-out. (Yes, we may have been lame, but we did have fun--and a tasty beverage--on occasion.)
As it turns out, Welles may have gotten some of the inspiration from a source other than his theatrical muse--namely, the wine bottle, as this video shows. |

[News] [California] |
At the 232nd annual meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Francisco, some attendees spent Sunday afternoon examining the prospects of making better wine through chemistry.
Using chemical analysis to improve wine, by adjusting elements during fermentation or simply using it as a tool to decide when to harvest grapes, could be the wave of the future. But there's some concern that the result could be wines that all taste the same. |

[News] [California] |
Tens of millions of dollars worth of vintage wine were believed to be destroyed by a relentless fire October 12 at a huge Vallejo, CA, warehouse that was considered one of the most secure places for wineries and individuals to store prized collections.
The three-alarm fire at Wines Central sent plumes of smoke more than 700 feet high that could be seen from miles and could not be controlled by firefighters because the Mare Island building -- which once housed Navy torpedoes -- had steel doors and 3-foot-thick concrete walls and a roof that could not be penetrated. |

That glass of garnet-colored California merlot may caress the palate and delight the nose, but state officials say wineries also create a less agreeable byproduct: smog.
Now air-quality managers in California's San Joaquin Valley, where nearly two-thirds of domestic wine is produced, are cracking down. By year's end, local officials will propose the nation's first restrictions targeting pollution from winemaking. |
