This is kind of a long and wandering story, but please, bear with me.

As some of you may remember, LaWineClub held its first-ever Tasting Note Competition, a New-Orleans-only event, during July and August of 2005. We had not yet announced the winner, because the prize--a truly fine bottle of wine--had not yet been awarded.

Training Your Palate the Grocery Store Way

A friend recently pointed out a series of videos produced by Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library. In these segments (ranging in length from around 10 minutes up to a half-hour or more if he gets going), Gary discusses a wine-related topic of interest. He's got almost 150 made at the time of this writing, so that's a lot of wine knowledge out there, available for you to suck up for free. And hey, if you are so moved, you can purchase online from the Wine Library as a thank-you.

We're providing the video below as a nice example. It's on the long side (32 minutes and change), but it gives a great lesson in how to train your palate: get out to the grocery store, make some purchases, and start tasting!

Martin Wine Cellars Welcomes Back Tasters!

We have missed you, and as we celebrate 31 years of fine wine and spirits tastings, we would like to welcome back all of our seasoned tasters and invite new tasters to eight terrific tasting events in September and October of 2006.

We appreciate your inquiries and patience while we used the Metairie Tasting Room as our temporary office after Hurricane Katrina.

Now that we have moved back to our permanent office building and the Tasting Room has been restored to normal, "let the tastings begin!"

Seven of these tastings will be informative, featuring knowledgeable guest speakers. Wine lovers will have a chance to swirl, sniff, and sip their way through eight wines accompanied by and matched perfectly with delectable artisanal cheeses from our Gourmet Food Department. In addition, they will explore wine producing regions, terminology, wine-making techniques, and more. After tasting all the wines, there will be a group discussion. These educational and entertaining experiences are a must for all wine fans.

Don’t miss out on our reception-style tasting event, Once Upon a Vine. Get your tickets today and come enjoy over 150 wines from around the world being poured by wine makers and wine consultants.

NOWFE 2006: The Post-Katrina Experience

[New Orleans]
The folks at Toad Hollow had some nice wines ready for tasting.
I've attended the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience two times before this year's event. Like so many who are familiar with the long weekend's wine-soaked festivities, I wondered: how would this year be different? A mere 8 months after Katrina and some less-than-effective levees wiped out 80% of the city--and with most of the damaged areas still far from recovery--would the Crescent City's wine and food experience be changed beyond recognition?

Review: Galatoire's Bistro, Baton Rouge

[Editorial]
[Baton Rouge]
When the famous New Orleans restaurant, Galatoire's, announced shortly after Hurricane Katrina struck that it was opening a restaurant in Baton Rouge, much of New Orleans rose up in anguished protest. To be fair, several New Orleans-based businesses had just announced that they were moving to other, undamaged cities, abandoning the place that had allowed them to grow without a second glance. (Ruth's Chris Steak House, we're looking at you.) It was painful to think that a New Orleans icon like Galatoire's might be joining them.

Then the owners made it clear that they had been planning a Baton Rouge restaurant for some time, and that they were definitely going to re-open their French Quarter restaurant as soon as possible. (It's open now.) Tempers died down, and Baton Rouge inhabitants, both previous and post-Katrina, started simply looking forward to that highest form of ordinary entertainment for south Louisiana: a new restaurant to try.

Aging Wine Electronically--You Choose

Posted by perle0 on 2006-12-11 21:17:55 (5317 views)

[News]
[Japan]
The New York Times ran an article in its Magazine section discussing the creation of Hiroshi Tanaka, a Japanese inventor. It's a machine that uses electricity to "age" wine the equivalent of years of cellaring in only a few seconds. His invention uses electricity to break up the water molecules in the wine, allowing them to bond more completely with the other molecules...the ones that make wine different from water. In theory, at least, that's also what aging can take 10 to 20 years to accomplish. Tasters say that the machine can make a noticeable difference on a young, tannic wine in need of mellowing.

But there's another way....
