Allergy Warnings Coming to Wine Labels

Posted by perle0 on 2006-08-08 01:10:56 (4072 views)

[News]
[USA]
Let's say you're allergic to eggs. Deathly allergic, even. The smallest hint of eggs leads to salivating, stomach cramps, flushing of skin and eyes, lightheadedness, vomiting, diarrhea, and in extreme cases, even death. But at least you can relax with a glass of wine while you ponder which menu items might hide some wiley trace of egg.

Not so much. Egg whites are often used in the fining process during winemaking, which helps to remove sediments and clarify the wine prior to bottling. For other allergy sufferers, fining can also be performed with milk proteins or isinglass, a substance derived from fish. For anyone with severe allergies to these substances, sipping the wrong wine can produce a nasty reaction. The solution? Labeling.

[News]
[Japan]
Barokes wine in a canIn 2002, Barokes Australia patented its design for wine in a can--the only patented canned wine in existence. And in a recent taste test, the Japanese gave it high marks.

This patented wine-in-a-can promises a shelf life of up to five years, so it's ready for cellaring. In the taste test among 3000 Japanese, only 5% said that they found it odd to drink wine from a can. No one complained about the quality, but a few did say it would take getting used to.

Orson Welles and a Little Too Much Paul Masson

Posted by perle0 on 2006-10-19 01:29:15 (13585 views)

[Editorial]
[California]
If you're of a certain age, you probably remember the commercials that an aging Orson Welles did for Paul Masson wines. They featured the memorable tag line: "We will sell no wine before its time." In my house, this led to frequent shouting of "It's time to sell some wine!" often accompanied by pantomimes of turning empty pockets inside-out. (Yes, we may have been lame, but we did have fun--and a tasty beverage--on occasion.)

As it turns out, Welles may have gotten some of the inspiration from a source other than his theatrical muse--namely, the wine bottle, as this video shows.

[News]
[England]
Did you ever order a glass of wine, and receive a small fishbowl containing roughly a third of a bottle? And did you then think, "Hey, it's okay...I only had one glass of wine!" If so, you're not alone--and you could be setting yourself up for problems later on.

A British clinic specializing in treating addictions warns that the trend towards larger wine glasses may lead people to drink more than they realize, making it easier for them to develop into alcoholics.

Warehouse Fire Consumes $100 Million in Fine Wine

Posted by perle0 on 2005-10-16 01:35:44 (5309 views)

[News]
[California]
Tens of millions of dollars worth of vintage wine were believed to be destroyed by a relentless fire October 12 at a huge Vallejo, CA, warehouse that was considered one of the most secure places for wineries and individuals to store prized collections.

The three-alarm fire at Wines Central sent plumes of smoke more than 700 feet high that could be seen from miles and could not be controlled by firefighters because the Mare Island building -- which once housed Navy torpedoes -- had steel doors and 3-foot-thick concrete walls and a roof that could not be penetrated.
