Viva Italia at Cork & Bottle

Viva Italia at Long Last

"What’s it all about? Integrity--there simply is no quality in wine without integrity"
–-Jens Schmidt, Owner, Montecastelli Selections

This past summer, Jon and Laurie of Cork & Bottle made a trip to the Montecastelli Wine Fair in Tuscany to find some new discoveries (we know, it’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it!). Montecastelli is a Tuscan-based company that works with Italian wineries focused on estate-grown wines made organically and biodynamically--in other words, wines that are painfully pure and true to region and type. Although the air conditioning was in short supply, the food was good and the wines were incredible.

Over 40 producers featuring about 300 wines were tasted over three days. The producers were charming (and some of them even spoke English); needless to say, the wines were amazing. Jon and Laurie left the fair just dying to get their new discoveries back to Cork & Bottle, and since July they’ve been waiting for them to show up. Waiting. For nearly 6 months. The good news is that the wines are starting to arrive and the nearly 6-month wait for these new discoveries did nothing to diminish the excitement about them. The following wines are some of the highlights of the trip; they are now in stock in both stores and available for purchase on-line.

Happy Shopping!

Cork and Bottle Celebrates Running of the Beaujolais Nouveau

Posted by perle0 on 2006-11-14 21:59:26 (2617 views)

[Events]
[Louisiana]
Cork & Bottle will greet the new Beaujolais by transforming from mere wine shop into Beaujolais headquarters on Thursday, November 16th, in New Orleans and Friday, November 17th, in Baton Rouge with a pair of tasting events. Both events are from 5:00 to 7:00.

For starters, they will help celebrate the harvest of 2006 by pouring (and selling) the Beaujolais Nouveau of Georges Duboeuf. Beaujolais Nouveau is a simple wine that is meant to mark a celebration of the harvest and to mark the festivities of the year to come. To help celebrate, Cork &Bottle will be giving away crystal wine glasses, hats, scarves, shirts, and much more. For our Thursday event in New Orleans, they'll have the De Soto Street band on hand to make the event even livelier.....

And, if you're interested in more serious wine they'll also be showcasing the amazing 2005 Cru Wines from Georges DuBoeuf. The wines from 2005 show classic balance, structure, and the lively style of how good the Gamay grape can be. Once again, the critics agree, as evidenced by the fact that Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate just unloaded a heap of praise over the 2005s, and there will be tastings of them all at the Beaujolais celebration.

Pontchartrain Vineyards' "Jazz'n the Vines" 2006 Concert Series will come to a graceful conclusion on Saturday, Oct. 28th, with the heavenly sounds of Banu Gibson and her Quarter.

Today, Banu Gibson stands virtually at the top of her field. A superior and swinging jazz singer, Banu is one of the few vocalists of her generation to maintain exclusive loyalty to songs of the 1920’s, 30’s, and 40’s. Rather than mimic singers of the past, she mixes fresh renditions of Tin Pan Alley standards and jazz classics by Gershwin, Ellington, Berlin, Carmichael, Waller, Porter, et. al. A powerful force on stage as well as on her CDs on the Swing Out label, her enthusiasm and showmanship are highlighted by her wide range and versatility.

John Parker and Lakefront Loungers at Pontchartrain Vineyards

[Events]
[Louisiana]
John Parker and The Lakefront Loungers will play at Pontchartrain Vineyards’ Jazz’n the Vines concert at on Saturday, September 23rd, 6:30 to 9:00 p.m.

There’s an interesting history associated with the group's naming, according to leader John Parker. The original Lakefront Loungers were formed to recreate the outdoor sounds of the erstwhile weekend mecca of New Orleans, Milneburg, on the shores of storied Lake Pontchartrain. The Old Lake resort area had hundreds of camps, each with its own music, frequently employing jazz musicians from the Crescent City. The seawall put in by the WPA in the mid-thirties was the end of the camps and the hot jazz along the lakefront. Then, in the early sixties, Dr. Edmond Souchon, along with Johnny Wiggs and a band of New Orleans jazz giants, recalled "the good old days" of Milneburg as The Lakefront Loungers.

The New Orleans Wine and Food Experience (NOWFE) is proud to announce the Culinary Winners of 2006.

The list is a perfect example of how tough it was to sample everything at the Grand Tasting. I attended on Friday, and of the 8 winners, I only managed to taste 3 of them:

The Best of Show, Sweet winner, Key Lime Pie with Fresh Berries by Chef Tom Wolfe of Wolfe's in the Warehouse. This was, indeed, a tasty little treat.

Soft Shell Crab Bisque with Black Truffle Butter, by Chef Tory McPhail of Commander's Palace. This was probably my favorite of what I tasted; the black truffle butter really made the dish. What a perfect way to prepare us for the (we hope soon) re-opening of Commander's at last.

Duck and Cherry Terrine with Toasted Brioche and Fresh Herb Aoili, by Chef Tom Wolfe of Peristyle. That Chef Wolfe gets around!

The folks at Toad Hollow had some nice wines ready for tasting.
I've attended the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience two times before this year's event. Like so many who are familiar with the long weekend's wine-soaked festivities, I wondered: how would this year be different? A mere 8 months after Katrina and some less-than-effective levees wiped out 80% of the city--and with most of the damaged areas still far from recovery--would the Crescent City's wine and food experience be changed beyond recognition?

Review: Galatoire's Bistro, Baton Rouge

Posted by perle0 on 2006-01-23 02:13:56 (13208 views)

[Editorial]
[Baton Rouge]
When the famous New Orleans restaurant, Galatoire's, announced shortly after Hurricane Katrina struck that it was opening a restaurant in Baton Rouge, much of New Orleans rose up in anguished protest. To be fair, several New Orleans-based businesses had just announced that they were moving to other, undamaged cities, abandoning the place that had allowed them to grow without a second glance. (Ruth's Chris Steak House, we're looking at you.) It was painful to think that a New Orleans icon like Galatoire's might be joining them.

Then the owners made it clear that they had been planning a Baton Rouge restaurant for some time, and that they were definitely going to re-open their French Quarter restaurant as soon as possible. (It's open now.) Tempers died down, and Baton Rouge inhabitants, both previous and post-Katrina, started simply looking forward to that highest form of ordinary entertainment for south Louisiana: a new restaurant to try.
