The Language of Wine

[News]
[USA]
An article in The Capital Times of Madison, WI explores the difficulties of communicating about wine without a truly shared vocabulary. An example:

One of the biggest challenges facing wine drinkers is adequately describing the "texture" or "body" of the wine they enjoy. A wine that's medium-bodied will seem heavy to some drinkers, and light to others. For the sake of convenience, Dahl often equates the body of a specific wine with the way milk feels in the mouth.

"A light-bodied wine will feel like skim milk," she says, "while a medium-bodied wine feel more like two-percent. Wines with a heavier body are more like whole milk."

Cork & Bottle Oriel Tasting Events

[Events]
[Louisiana]
Next month on March 14th and 16th, Kelly Ford, National Director of Oriel Wines, will be in town to help C&B host a pair of free wine tastings (in Baton Rouge and New Orleans) and a knock-out wine dinner at Ralph's on the Park in New Orleans.

Oriel is a company that offers a line-up of wines made specially for them, under the Oriel label, by a group of the best winemakers in the world, who have made wines from Château D'Yquem to Penfold's Grange. Oriel is not a winery; it is not an importer or a broker. Oriel is not tied to one wine region, and Oriel does not follow any business model we've ever seen in the wine business. The Oriel team travels to the very best wine regions in the world, taps ONE of the very best winemakers in the region, and tasks that winemaker with making ONE wine that best expresses both the region and the winemaker's talent. Basically Oriel goes to a wine region, hands the winemaker an empty canvas, and says, "Give us your best work of art." The thing that makes it so great, that makes it work, is that unlike so many importers, Oriel isn't trying to be all things to all people. By focusing on one wine per region and putting their trust in the hands of the winemaker, they are creating simple brilliance and focus in a bottle of wine. From top to bottom, the range of Oriel wines is both great and impressive. Oriel includes a vast array of everything from light, fruity German Rieslings and Albarino's up to rich, elegant estate Barolos, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and Napa Valley Cabernet.

But the increase in wine consumption wasn't evenly distributed across sports. Some sports, it seems, are more wine-friendly than others. Which sports are the wine-drinkingest of them all?

The thieves ignored electronics, jewelry, and lesser wines to hit the basement wine cellar and zero in on the good stuff: the average value of each stolen bottle was $3000. The haul included a magnum of '59 Petrus with an estimated value of $11,000. Because of their focus on high-value bottles, it's clear that the thieves knew their wine.

The Latest Hot Investment: Wine

Posted by perle0 on 2006-12-18 23:25:00 (3916 views)

[News]
[USA]
A recent study by economists at the University of Wyoming found that high-end wine has been an investment with very low relative risk and reliably high returns.

Looking at red Bordeaux auction prices over a period from 1996 to 2003, they found that the average annual return on investments in Bordeaux was between 7.5 percent and 9.5 percent higher than would have been predicted by factors that account for risk, making it a better investment choice than almost any other option. The best investment found in the study was the 1966 Haut-Brion, which posted an average monthly return of about 7.5 percent during their sample period. Still, 75 wines studied were found to have average monthly returns in excess of 1 percent per month.

That's one free-flowing bottle.

Viva Italia at Long Last

"What’s it all about? Integrity--there simply is no quality in wine without integrity"
–-Jens Schmidt, Owner, Montecastelli Selections

This past summer, Jon and Laurie of Cork & Bottle made a trip to the Montecastelli Wine Fair in Tuscany to find some new discoveries (we know, it’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it!). Montecastelli is a Tuscan-based company that works with Italian wineries focused on estate-grown wines made organically and biodynamically--in other words, wines that are painfully pure and true to region and type. Although the air conditioning was in short supply, the food was good and the wines were incredible.

Over 40 producers featuring about 300 wines were tasted over three days. The producers were charming (and some of them even spoke English); needless to say, the wines were amazing. Jon and Laurie left the fair just dying to get their new discoveries back to Cork & Bottle, and since July they’ve been waiting for them to show up. Waiting. For nearly 6 months. The good news is that the wines are starting to arrive and the nearly 6-month wait for these new discoveries did nothing to diminish the excitement about them. The following wines are some of the highlights of the trip; they are now in stock in both stores and available for purchase on-line.

Study: Red Wine Negates Health Effects of Being Fat

[News]

A new study published in Nature magazine shows that resveratrol, a substance found naturally in red wine (and to a lesser extent, white) may help the overweight to avoid some of the most common ill effects associated with excess pounds. You may still get fat, but at least you'll be fat and healthy (or sufficiently tipsy that you won't care either way).

In the study, three groups of mice were given different diets. One group ate a healthy, low-fat diet. Not surprisingly, these mice were trim and healthy.

A second group ate a high-fat diet with plenty of calories. Again not surprisingly, these mice got fat. They also suffered from many of the same ailments that obese humans are prone to, including diabetes and heart disease.

Cork and Bottle Celebrates Running of the Beaujolais Nouveau

[Events]
[Louisiana]
Cork & Bottle will greet the new Beaujolais by transforming from mere wine shop into Beaujolais headquarters on Thursday, November 16th, in New Orleans and Friday, November 17th, in Baton Rouge with a pair of tasting events. Both events are from 5:00 to 7:00.

For starters, they will help celebrate the harvest of 2006 by pouring (and selling) the Beaujolais Nouveau of Georges Duboeuf. Beaujolais Nouveau is a simple wine that is meant to mark a celebration of the harvest and to mark the festivities of the year to come. To help celebrate, Cork &Bottle will be giving away crystal wine glasses, hats, scarves, shirts, and much more. For our Thursday event in New Orleans, they'll have the De Soto Street band on hand to make the event even livelier.....

And, if you're interested in more serious wine they'll also be showcasing the amazing 2005 Cru Wines from Georges DuBoeuf. The wines from 2005 show classic balance, structure, and the lively style of how good the Gamay grape can be. Once again, the critics agree, as evidenced by the fact that Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate just unloaded a heap of praise over the 2005s, and there will be tastings of them all at the Beaujolais celebration.

If you're of a certain age, you probably remember the commercials that an aging Orson Welles did for Paul Masson wines. They featured the memorable tag line: "We will sell no wine before its time." In my house, this led to frequent shouting of "It's time to sell some wine!" often accompanied by pantomimes of turning empty pockets inside-out. (Yes, we may have been lame, but we did have fun--and a tasty beverage--on occasion.)

As it turns out, Welles may have gotten some of the inspiration from a source other than his theatrical muse--namely, the wine bottle, as this video shows.

John Parker and Lakefront Loungers at Pontchartrain Vineyards

John Parker and The Lakefront Loungers will play at Pontchartrain Vineyards’ Jazz’n the Vines concert at on Saturday, September 23rd, 6:30 to 9:00 p.m.

There’s an interesting history associated with the group's naming, according to leader John Parker. The original Lakefront Loungers were formed to recreate the outdoor sounds of the erstwhile weekend mecca of New Orleans, Milneburg, on the shores of storied Lake Pontchartrain. The Old Lake resort area had hundreds of camps, each with its own music, frequently employing jazz musicians from the Crescent City. The seawall put in by the WPA in the mid-thirties was the end of the camps and the hot jazz along the lakefront. Then, in the early sixties, Dr. Edmond Souchon, along with Johnny Wiggs and a band of New Orleans jazz giants, recalled "the good old days" of Milneburg as The Lakefront Loungers.

Martin Wine Cellars Welcomes Back Tasters!

We have missed you, and as we celebrate 31 years of fine wine and spirits tastings, we would like to welcome back all of our seasoned tasters and invite new tasters to eight terrific tasting events in September and October of 2006.

We appreciate your inquiries and patience while we used the Metairie Tasting Room as our temporary office after Hurricane Katrina.

Now that we have moved back to our permanent office building and the Tasting Room has been restored to normal, "let the tastings begin!"

Seven of these tastings will be informative, featuring knowledgeable guest speakers. Wine lovers will have a chance to swirl, sniff, and sip their way through eight wines accompanied by and matched perfectly with delectable artisanal cheeses from our Gourmet Food Department. In addition, they will explore wine producing regions, terminology, wine-making techniques, and more. After tasting all the wines, there will be a group discussion. These educational and entertaining experiences are a must for all wine fans.

Don’t miss out on our reception-style tasting event, Once Upon a Vine. Get your tickets today and come enjoy over 150 wines from around the world being poured by wine makers and wine consultants.

Congress Recognizes Wine Anniversary; Katrina Who?

Posted by perle0 on 2006-08-22 01:26:43 (3768 views)

[News]
[USA]
In August 2006, the U.S. Senate unanimously agreed to a House resolution introduced by Congressman Mike Thompson (D-Napa Valley), passing the resolution recognizing the significance of the Napa Valley victory at the 1976 Paris Wine Tasting, 30 years ago. House Concurrent Resolution 399 recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of those who created the winning wines and the many successes of the California wine industry in the intervening thirty years.

A similar resolution to acknowledge the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's landfall failed to pass the House of Representatives--perhaps because it contained language suggesting that the government was committed to rebuilding New Orleans, only a year too late for most residents and business owners. (Better late than never, right? But then again, the non-binding resolution didn't pass.)
